OPTIMIST CLUB of REDLANDS
PLANS, IMPLEMENTS, and FINANCES NINE MAJOR YOUTH EVENTS YEARLY.
Our major events are as follows:

•  YOUTH APPRECIATION DAY
Students are selected for being outstanding and active in academics, sports, arts, music,
leadership, or community service. Approximately eighty students are recognized with
complimentary lunches, gifts, certificates, and a thought-provoking speaker.

•  CIVICS DAY
Involves scheduling eighty students and matching each student to a public employee for half a day
to learn about government jobs that service the public. The students and employees have a
complimentary lunch and listen to a motivational speaker; in addition, the students receive a gift and
certificate.

•  ESSAY and ORATORICAL CONTESTS
Topics are thought provoking. Winners read their essays or speak before the Optimist Club of
Redlands, with the best three winning prize money and an opportunity to move on to the district or
national level. Grand prize is a college scholarship and paid trip for the students and their parents.

•  OPTIMIST GAMES
Involve over 200 special needs students who are provided a fun opportunity to test their physical
skills. Activities include obstacle course, Frisbee throw, bean bag toss, basketball shots, softball
throw, and ten-yard dash. The Redlands High School football team, Optimists, and school teachers
make up many of the volunteers. Afterwards, recognition awards, lunch, and beverages are
provided.

•  YOUTH TRACK MEET
Includes the long jump and is for third, fourth, and fifth grade public school students from Redlands,
Lorna Linda, and Highland.

•  OPTIMIST SWIM RELAYS
I
nvolve thirteen high schools in our region, with a total of twenty swimming teams and hundreds of
students. There are five major events and twenty-four heats.

•  PUNT-PASS-KICK and PITCH-HIT-RUN
Include boys and girls aged eight to fifteen years. Individuals may compete without belonging to
organizations such as All-American League Football and Junior Baseball Leagues. All youngsters
involved receive a participant certificate, and each age group winner receives a trophy and an
opportunity to participate on a regional, and possibly the national level.
