Civics day is an annual event put on by the Redlands Optimist Club to introduce area high school students to professions within the public sector of the city. Approximately 60 students from the four Redlands high schools (RHS REV, CVHS, and Orangewood) are selected by school officials and are paired with a public employee for half a day to learn about government jobs that serve the public. There is strong participation from city officials, including from the mayor’s office, the city council, the school board, and the police and fire departments. After the morning experience, the students and city officials convene for a luncheon with the Optimist Club, where they share their impressions and listen to a motivational speaker. Participating students also receive a gift and certificate from the Optimists.
