The Optimist Games event is the most important youth service project run by the Redlands Optimist Club. Now in its 28th year, the Optimist Games is a Special Olympics type of event held each year since 1980 for about 250 special needs children from Redlands elementary, middle and high schools.  With the assistance of over 300 teen volunteers from the local high schools, the Optimists run more than 20 different games such as the 25 yard dash and the ring toss, after which lunch is served to the participants and their parents, and the student volunteers. Every student is a winner in these games, and is awarded a medal and an Optimist Games T-shirt.
