Civics day exposes area high school students to various city professions by pairing each of the 60 or so selected students with a public employee for half a day to learn about government jobs that serve the public. The students and employees then convene for a luncheon with the Optimist Club and listen to a motivational speaker. Participating students also receive a gift and certificate from the Optimists.
Approximately eighty students from the four Redlands High Schools are selected by teaching staff for being outstanding in academics, sports, arts, music, leadership, or community service. They are recognized together in a noon luncheon, given gifts and certificates, and are stimulated by a thought-provoking speaker.
The Essay and Oratorical Contests are Optimist International events, with cash awards, medals, and certificates given to winners at the local, regional, and national levels. The Redlands club hosts each event at a luncheon for the winners, their parents, and club members.
The Redlands Optimist Club and Redlands High School Athletic Departments co-host this annual event, which is a co-ed competition involving a number of area high schools. This non-league meet is the first significant event of the season, allowing coaches and athletes to prepare for upcoming league competition. The Redlands Optimist Club provides all medals and trophies, and also provides the manpower needed for back-up time keeping
The Optimist Games are a Special Olympics type of event held each year since 1980 for over 200 special needs children from Redlands elementary, middle and high schools. After the events, which include 25 yard dash, ring toss, and many other games, lunch is served to the children and their parents, and every student is given a medal and an Optimist Games T-shirt.
The Optimist Youth Track meet is a free competition for Redlands school members in grades 3-5. The events are the 50-yard dash, 400- yard dash, mile run, 4×110-yard relay, long jump and softball throw. Medals are given to the top three finishers and ribbons to the rest.
The Redlands Optimist Club provides volunteers each year to assist in the running of the Citrus Belt League swimming finals. We assist in the timing of the swimmers at this exciting event.
